Fan Li, a doctor of the State of Yue, built a city here to reject Wu. At that time, it was called Guling, and later Xiling was changed to Xixing until now. As the source of the East Zhejiang Canal, it is an important node connecting the Qiantang River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It was once a vital transportation hub connecting the north and south, and a prosperous center for merchants and travelers. It is known as the “gateway to the two Zhejiangs” and “the first place in eastern Zhejiang”. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xixing Old Street became an important hub for canal transport (especially for tribute grain during the Ming and Qing dynasties) with its unique geographical location. Xixing Old Street is also the starting point of the “Tang Poetry Road in Eastern Zhejiang”. Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and other famous writers of all generations have left magnificent poems here, making it a cultural landmark of the blend of literature and history. In 2002, Xixing Old Street was listed as one of the top ten historical protection blocks in Hangzhou. A new round of historical and cultural block protection is being prepared, and new requirements are put forward for the scope and content of protection.
